On Friday, October 25, 2024, Golden Star Wassa Ltd. (GSWL) donated to the Wassa East, Mpohor and Twifo Ati-Morkwa District Assemblies to support their preparations for the 40th National Farmers Day celebrations, set for November 4, 2024. The donated items, valued at GHS 260,000, include tricycles, knapsack sprayers, wheelbarrows, bicycles, sewing machines and machetes.
National Farmers Day is an annual event in Ghana that recognizes the critical role of farmers and fishermen in supporting the nation’s economy and food security. Golden Star’s commitment to agriculture extends beyond annual donations, with a longstanding focus on sustainable farming through programmes like the Golden Star Oil Palm Plantation (GSOPP). This award-winning, RSPO-certified program directly supports over 1500 farmers, encouraging sustainable palm oil cultivation on land rehabilitated from previously disturbed areas, thereby contributing to both economic growth and environmental restoration.
This year’s Farmers Day theme, “Building Climate-Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security,” highlights Ghana’s drive to implement agricultural practices that mitigate the impact of climate change. The event will celebrate Ghana's agricultural heritage and promote knowledge exchange and innovation among farmers and stakeholders nationwide.
Commenting on the donation, Mr. Shaddrack Sowah, Managing Director and Vice President of GSWL, said, “Golden Star is honoured to contribute to the success of this year’s National Farmers Day. Our support reflects our ongoing commitment to foster sustainable agricultural practices and uplift our host communities through initiatives that improve livelihoods and build resilience against climate challenges.”
Traditionally held in December, this year’s event was moved to November considering the upcoming 2024 general elections.
