The Golden Star Ladies Club recently concluded its annual Pink October campaign bringing attention to breast cancer and mental health. This year’s campaign featured several events to increase awareness and provide support for Golden Star host communities.
One of the primary activities was a free breast cancer screening on October 29, 2024, organized for the Accra Town catchment community. This free screening aimed to break down barriers to healthcare access, providing vital early detection services that can be lifesaving for those at risk.
In the days leading up to the screening, a Mental Health webinar featuring Dr. Owusu-Kumi, a specialist from SSNIT Hospital, was organized for employees on October 10. Additionally, awareness education sessions were held across all departments from October 23 to October 28 during PSI meetings. This was conducted by Careflight Ghana, GSWL’s health service provider. These sessions educated employees on breast cancer prevention, symptoms, and the importance of mental health support.
The campaign concluded on October 29 with a Pink October Vigil Ceremony, a climax of the month’s awareness activities and a show of solidarity. The vigil, which had brass band music included:
- Lighting of candles of hope and a prayer to honour survivors, support those still fighting, and remember those lost.
- Cake cutting, celebrating resilience and unity in the face of adversity.
- Words of hope delivered by Golden Star’s management team, including messages from MD & VP Mr. Shaddrack Sowah, Chifeng Gold Chairman Mr. Wang, Chifeng President Madam Lydia Yang, GSWL Chairman Mr. Kevin Chen, and GSWL CEO Mr. Carl Baker-Duly. These messages reinforced the company’s commitment to ongoing health support.
- A symbolic helium balloon release marked a collective pledge of hope and a show of solidarity against breast cancer and mental health.
By leading impactful health initiatives, the Ladies Club closely supports Golden Star’s broader goals of community engagement and improved health care.
