Ghana Minister for Environment, Sicence, Technology and Innovation Pays Working Visit to Golden Star Wassa Limited

On the 6th of December, 2022, the minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Hon. Dr. Kweku Afriyie paid a working visit to Golden Star Wassa Limited (GSWL).

Accompanying him on the visit were the executive director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Hon. Dr. Henry K. Kokofu and deputy executive director/operations EPA, Ing. Ransford Sakyi.

The visit was to observe the progress of GSWL after it was acquired by the Chifeng Gold Group in January 2022.

The Minister and his entourage were taken on a tour by the management team led by Mr. Kwabena Owusu-Akyaw (Snr. Processing Manager), Mr. James German (HSEC Manager), Charlie Dong (Chifeng Gold Snr. Sustainability Manager), Mr. Peter Addai (GSOPP Operations Manager), Mr. Eric Kofi Bondzie (Human Resource and Administration Manager) and Mr. Nicholas Hagan (Project Superintendent).

They team visited GSWL’s operational areas as well as its tailings storage facilities and the Golden Star Oil Palm Plantation (GSOPP).

Mr. Shaddrack Adjetey Sowah, Vice President / Managing Director of GSWL presented the scope and prospects of the Wassa operations to the team. He also commended EPA's continuous support and cooperation in implementing measures to mitigate the environmental impacts from its operations.

The Minister in response, commended GSWL for complying with environmental policies and initiatives and maintaining high safety standards where the environment was concerned. He further urged GSWL not to see the EPA as a progress hindrance but as a contributing force that will support the growth and expansion of the mine.
